Sam H. Lee | Founder & CEO
Mr. Lee is the Founder of Alta Energy and brings more than 20 years of venture capital experience, helping build over 50 early stage technology and alternative energy companies. He is Founder and Managing Director of Infinity Capital and ITV. Mr. Lee previously held management and technical positions at LSI Logic Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices, and Hewlett-Packard Company. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University, an M.E. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Chris Tilley | EVP & Chief Strategy Officer
Mr. Tilley leads Alta Energy’s Strategic Planning, New Product/Service R&D, Business Development and Partnerships activities. Mr. Tilley brings over 20 years of experience in renewable energy and energy technology to the company. He has extensive growth company experience having led successful startups in the solar and business information sectors; as CEO of SunLink Corporation, Founder and CEO of Porvenir Inc. and President and CFO of Prevalent Power/EI Solutions. He has also worked as an engineer, management consultant and investment banker at Bechtel, Booz-Allen, and Santander Investment. Mr. Tilley holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from LSU, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, and an M.B.A. from INSEAD.
Greg Lahann | Chief Financial Officer
In addition to serving as CFO at Alta Energy, Mr. Lahann is CFO of Lumenetix, Inc. and Claremont Creek Ventures. He is also a Managing Director of Novus Ventures. Mr. Lahann previously was General Partner and CFO at MK Global Ventures and served as an Audit Manager at Price Waterhouse & Co. He holds a BA in Accounting from San Jose State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Thomas Toy | Board Member
Mr. Toy has over 20 years of venture capital investing experience in the U.S. and China, spanning IT, healthcare and clean technology investments. He is a Managing Director of Startup Capital Ventures, a Co-Founder and Managing Director of PacRim Ventures and is a Partner and Advisor to ICCP Venture Partners. Mr. Toy serves as a Board Member of Hanwha SolarOne and other private companies, and was a co-lead investor in SunPower. He received a B.A. and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University.
Jack Busch | Advisor
Mr. Busch is Founder and Managing Partner of Busch International, an executive search firm. He has made over 300 Vice President and CEO placements at leading companies in the U.S. and worldwide. Representive clients include: Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, Atmel, Covad, Nvidia, and SunPower. Prior to starting Busch International, he was the Director of Major Accounts at Intel Corporation. Mr. Busch is a graduate of Southern Oregon University and holds an M.B.A. from the same institution. He is also a Trustee of the Computer History Museum.
Ross Merrill | Advisor
Mr. Merrill is a third generation Monterey County resident that has been active in the produce industry for 40 years. As Owner and President of Merrill Farms LLC, he runs a large-scale vegetable and berry production company based in Salinas, California. Mr. Merrill has served on the boards of several agricultural related companies, industry boards and a local charitable foundation. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from The University of the Pacific.
Jeff Hintzke | EVP of Operations
Mr. Hintzke manages and oversees project deployment services at Alta Energy. He brings over 20 years of technical, marketing and management experience in the semiconductor, IT and solar industries. Select prior positions include: Vice President and General Manager of the Inspection Division and Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Electroglas, Inc., and various Product Line and Marketing Management roles at Hewlett-Packard Company. Mr. Hintzke holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Marc Roper | EVP & Chief Commercial Officer
Mr. Roper has 25 years of experience in the solar and distributed energy industry. He served as CEO of Sovereign Modular, a company focused on developing low-cost applications of PV for CA public schools, which was acquired by Alta Energy in 2016. He has held executive leadership roles at distributed energy storage provider CODA Energy, solar PPA provider Tioga Energy, solar power systems developer Turner Renewable Energy, and photovoltaic manufacturer SCHOTT Solar. Early in his career, Mr. Roper managed residential business lines for PV manufacturer AstroPower, and headed up renewable energy programs for the State of Colorado’s energy office. Mr. Roper holds an MS Civil Engineering, a BSc in Engineering Physics, and a BA in Music from the University of Colorado.
Aaron Enz | VP of Business Development
Mr. Enz originates and manages strategic relationships, financing partnerships and new client engagements at Alta Energy. He has over 17 years of experience in investment banking, corporate finance and private capital markets. He was formerly a Partner at Watershed Capital and Wood Warren & Co., where he led a wide range of clean technology financing and M&A engagements. Mr. Enz holds a B.A. in Economics & Mathematics from Western Washington University, an M.A. in Business Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Paul Detering | Executive Advisor, Board Member
Mr. Detering is Founder and Managing Principal of Redwood Insights, an advisory and interim executive services firm. Mr. Detering brings over 25 years of experience leading early and growth stage companies in the clean technology, telecom and software industries. He founded and led Tioga Energy, one of the early pioneers and most experienced independent power purchase agreement (PPA) providers in the United States, where he oversaw the administration of over $400 million in corporate and project capital in his tenure as CEO. Other recent engagements include REC Solar where Mr. Detering served as CEO and CFO, and Coda Energy, an energy storage company that he led through a relaunch and sale. Mr. Detering serves on the board of directors of Simusolar and Recovery Café San Jose. He received a Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Physics from the Royal Military College of Canada and an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, where he graduated with high distinction as a Baker Scholar.
Douglas Herst | Board Member
Mr. Herst is a 40-year pioneer in indirect lighting systems for schools and offices. He is Founder and Chairman of Lumenetix, Inc., a leader in color-tunable LED lighting. He is also CEO and Chairman of Herst Ventures Inc., a firm that emanated from the sale of his previous business, Peerless Lighting Corporation to Acuity Brands. He served as CEO and owner of Peerless Lighting Corporation, an award winning designer and manufacturer of indirect lighting systems. Mr. Herst holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley. He is past Chairman of the Northern California Chapter of the World Presidents’ Organization and the Golden Gate Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
Tom McCalmont | Advisor
Mr. McCalmont is President and Co-founder of McCalmont Engineering, a specialized solar and energy storage engineering firm. He has a successful 35-year track record of entrepreneurship and applying new technology to solving real world problems. Previously, he was Co-founder and CEO of Regrid Power, a leading solar integrator that was sold in 2008. Mr. McCalmont co-founded SolarTech, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating solar adoption barriers. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Muskingum University, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and was awarded an honorary Sc.D. degree from Muskingum University.
Paul Utterback | Advisor
Mr. Utterback has spent over 40 years in the banking industry. Over his banking career, he specialized in managing and acquiring commercial banks. He has served on the boards of directors of numerous foundations, hospitals and community organizations. He holds degrees in economics and finance from the University of Missouri and is a graduate of the Wisconsin School of Banking.
